After two years of early endings, Boston College will finally move on in the ACC men's soccer tournament. Midway through the second half, defenseman Jamie Melas knocked in a loose ball off a BC corner kick to give the Eagles all the offense they would need to beat No. 8 seed Virginia in the quarterfinals, 1-0.

"We're playing pretty well," said BC head coach Ed Kelly to reporters. "I think we are playing very well defensively. I'd like to see us get our rhythm going in the passing game more, as we didn't get a lot going today because they stopped us pretty well. Virginia is a very good team, so we knew that it was going to be a tough one and tournament games are hard to prepare for."

Next up for BC is former Big East rival, No. 4 seed Virginia Tech, which scored its first tournament victory with a 3-0 win over Maryland earlier in the day. With members of the Hokies looking on, the Eagles wore down a Virginia team playing one night after defeating NC State in a play-in game.

Still, they were a dangerous team, which spent the beginning of the season ranked among the top five teams in the nation.

The teams played a scoreless first half; the Eagles outshot the Cavaliers four to two, but could not break through Virginia goaltender Dan Louisignau.

"In the first half, I don't think we played so well," said BC forward Alejandro Bedoya to reporters. "In the second half, we played to feet a little better, rather than sending long balls in the air to [Sherron] Manswell and we were fortunate to get a goal off a set corner piece. So, overall I think we played well."

That lone goal of the game came in the 64th minute with Ryan Sherman taking the corner kick. Sherman sent a curving ball to Manswell, who redirected the ball towards the lower left corner of the net.

The initial shot was stopped, but Melas came flying for the rebound, sliding in to strike the ball high into the net past Louisignau.

Virginia mounted a late surge, but BC goaltender Chris Brown was up to the task. The Eagles moved onto the ACC semifinals for the first time since joining the conference in 2005.
