Despite efforts by the Undergraduate Government of Boston College (UGBC) to secure approval, the Dropkick Murphys have been dropped from the list of Modstock performers.
"It was not our decision," said Ryan McHaffie, director of UGBC programming and CSOM '07.
The UGBC programming department must receive approval from the City of Boston, which has jurisdiction over the Mod lot, for concerts on that property. "The City of Boston licensing board said no. And they have the power and the right to do that, so we must play by the rules," said McHaffie.
While no specific reason was cited for why the city would not approve the Dropkick Murphys, speculation points to past incidents of rowdiness at Boston University, where the band plays each St. Patrick's Day.
"They have such a huge local following that it might have been a difficult situation to control," said McHaffie. Although the Boston College Police Department (BCPD) would have been responsible for patrolling the area, the Mod Lot's lack of a secure perimeter would have made it easily accessible to anyone coming on campus.
But the UGBC remains in the process of finding another set of acts. McHaffie said bids are currently in for the concert, which will happen on Thursday. Reel Big Fish is one band that might perform, although no contracts or negotiations have been confirmed yet.
Another smaller act would accompany Reel Big Fish, as well as the winners of BC's Battle of the Bands.
"We want an act that will be crazy and fun," said McHaffie.
The Modstock Concert will be one of several UGBC and Residence Hall Association (RHA) co-sponsored celebrations taking place on the last day of classes. A free barbecue will also be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Mod Lot, where there will also be moonbounces for students to use. The concert will follow from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
