Author examines ability to live on minimum wage

She then discussed the Terri Schiavo case, saying that money from Medicaid and a large malpractice settlement were paying for her hospital bills, and while Republicans wanted to keep her alive, Medicaid and torts are two issues they fight against.

Ehrenreich lauded Massachusetts as one of 13 states that has a minimum wage ($6.75) higher than the federal wage of $5.15 per hour.

"If you have a professor who turns out to be adjunct and they give a good lecture, do me a favor and give them a tip for me," she said, citing a number of positions at colleges that are typically underpaid, like adjunct professors, dining services, and housekeepers.

Ehrenreich encouraged students to do their own investigating into the wages and conditions of employees on campus.

"But don't do it [activism] in the spirit of charity," she said, pointing out that students should be active for themselves because the same conditions affecting others could soon affect themselves.
