Grad student dies following surgery
Ann Murray was pursuing social work and pastoral ministry in the Graduate School of Social Work (GSSW) when she died April 16 following a surgical procedure. A funeral mass for Murray was held at St. Brigid's church in Boston on April 22. The 29-year-old graduate from Drexel University with a degree in international marketing is survived by her parents Arthur and Margaret Murray, her brother Arthur, and sister Melissa.
PULSE program honored for service
The PULSE program of Boston College was recognized for student community service at three Catholic Charities sites at the Catholic Charities Volunteer Appreciation luncheon April 8. PULSE students at The Laboure Center, the Haitian Multi-Service Center, and the St. Ambrose Family Inn have volunteered a total of 35,000 hours since 1992. Melissa Sterk Barrett, assistant director of the PULSE program, accepted the award on behalf of PULSE students, faculty, and staff. Bishop Richard Lennon attended the awards ceremony and praised BC for the service work opportunities available to its students.
Faculty Day Event scheduled
A Faculty Day event will be held on Thursday, May 1. University president Rev. William P. Leahy, SJ, will be in attendance, and teaching and research awards will be presented. Posters displaying the work of faculty research incentive grant winners will also be shown. The event will be held in the Heights Room above Lower Campus Dining Hall.
College sued over campus' freedom of speech policies
The Foundation for Individual Rightsin Education, a civil liberties group, sued Shippensburg College in Pennsylvania. The group claims the university's speech code prohibits "presumtive statements" and conduct or attitudes that annoy another student or group on campus. The plaintiffs are political science majors and campus political organizations who feel the college's policies limit their ability to express themselves and feel their freedom of speech is repressed.
